When trees are cut down to ground level or above, they leave a tree stump where nothing can grow except mushrooms (including honey fungus), and new runners from the tree, which will need cutting back continuously.
There are methods of removing the stump which rely on rtting over a number of years, but this is not always successful. Tree stump grinding provides the most efficient form of stump removal, and can be done any time, either when the tree is first cut down or years later.
